National Speedway Directory Teams With TrackChasers For Annual Awards

Wilmette, IL (March 15, 2012) – National Speedway Directory is pleased to announce an increased involvement with the TrackChaser group through their recognition of the top five TrackChasers annually. Plaques will be given to the top five in the group, similar to NSD’s long-time sponsorship of Ron Hedger’s Super Fan contest in the National SpeedSport News. “We are proud to be associated with and help recognize this amazing group of dedicated race fans and travelers”, said Tim Frost, publisher of the National Speedway Directory.

Each year, plaques will be awarded to the top five group members who visit the most new tracks during the calendar year. The awards will be named after Ed Esser of Wisconsin, a long-time member and supporter of the group who passed away unexpectedly earlier this year.

Involvement between the NSD and TrackChasers dates to the beginning of the group, as NSD founder Allan Brown is a charter member. National Speedway Directory is also the sponsor of the “TrackChaserWorld Cup”, which is named in honor of Roscoe “Pappy” Hough, and recognizes the group member that has viewed wheel-to-wheel auto racing at the most different tracks during a lifetime. The late Ed Esser is the current group leader in lifetime tracks, having been to 1,430 different tracks, the final two the weekend before his passing.

Winners of the inaugural set of plaques from the 2011 season are Guy Smith, Ed Esser, Pam Smith, Roland Vanden Eynde of Belgium, and Mike Knappenberger. The award earned by the late Ed Esser, as well as a miniature version of the “TrackChaser World Cup” were presented posthumously to Ed’s son Lee by NSD’s Tim Frost.

TheTrackChaser group was founded by Guy Smith, whose popular “Roaming the Raceways” column has appeared in the Area Auto Racing News for more than 30 years. The group statistics are currently located on the web at www.roamingtheraceways.com, and the group also has a Yahoo! Groups listserve. Smith currently acts as group webmaster, listserve owner and moderator, statistician, and so-called commissioner. He said, “Our niche group is honored to be supported by the National SpeedwayDirectory, a publication that nearly all group members have relied on dating back to 1975. It’s a natural partnership. Both the TrackChasers and NSD always try to promote the sport of auto racing”.

The group listserve is open to anyone. Information on new tracks and upcoming racing events, as well as reports from events attended by group members is shared there. A link to join can be found on the website.

About TrackChasers

A TrackChaser attempts to see wheel-to-wheel auto racing at as many race tracks as possible. A trackchaser can only count a track once, no matter how many different events they have seen there.

Anyone is also welcome to have their individual track list included on the TrackChaser section of the website as long as they meet the minimum requirement of having seen racing at 200 different tracks; or 100 tracks if from outside NorthAmerica or if under the age of 18. The group operates on the honor system.

The TrackChaser group also undertakes projects of assembling track lists for famous racing drivers and personalities; with individuals as diverse as Jackie Stewart, Steve Kinser, and Chris Economaki included to name a few. More features are planned for the group and for the website in the future.

The TrackChaser group is a labor of love and we welcome new members to our community. There are no dues or fees involved. Information can be found at the website www.roamingtheraceways.com or and questions about the group may be directed to Guy Smith at RTRYFBAR@aol.com.

About National SpeedwayDirectory

This is the first installment on NSD Co-Founders’ Allan and Nancy Brown’s travels during 2012. Like many snowbirds, February means the racing season gets underway.

This is the first installment on NSD Co-Founders’ Allan and Nancy Brown’s travels during 2012. Like many snowbirds, February means the racing season gets underway.

We headed south for Speedweeks with our first stop at Screven Motor Speedway near Savannah, GA for the All Star Sprints and World of Outlaws Late Models. Daryn Pittman ended the chilly night by ending up in victory lane after winning the30 lap Sprint Car feature.

Earlier in the day we went to check out the Savannah Harbor Race Course. This neat circuit was created by the city on Hutchinson Island, which is just north of downtown. It was built for vintage racing and they hope to run their annual late year event is successful for many years to come.

The next day we headed south for the USAC Sprints at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, FL. Darren Hagen in one of the Hoffman #69s was the class of the field and took the 30 lap feature.

We had a day off before we went farther south for a week of racing at East Bay Raceway Park on the east side of Tampa. Forty some of the nation’s best dirt track Late Model drivers greeted the fans to some wild racing. Don O’Neil started the week off with two straight wins, but on Wednesday his luck went sour as Ray Cook had a great night as he topped the 35 lapper.

The next night it was exciting as Steve Francis used the high groove around Austin Hubbard on the last corner. The Lucas Oil Late Model Series crew, keep the shows flowing and each night ended before nine-thirty, until Friday when an all day rain lengthened the night with the track too wet to race on. They kept working on the track and finally and 9:30 time trials started. Even with the long delay Dennis Erb won the 50 lapper before midnight. That made five straights at East Bay for us, but it was time to move on.

The next morning we headed to Daytona Beach and caught the ARCA race at the big track. Bobby Gerhart pulled a rabbit out of hat as he was running fifth on the the last corner but went to the outside and won his 8th ARCA 200.

The next day we headed south to watch sports car racing at Palm Beach International Raceway near West Palm Beach. Jan Magnussen dominated The Camaro Cup races that day. We headed back north to go to New Smyrna Speedway for night three of the World Series of Stock Car Racing. It was also the first night of two for the TBARA Sprints. It was Mickey Kremgens in the #68 that came out on top in the 30 lapper. We returned the next night and Troy DeCaires won the Sprint car finale.

That ended our Florida trip as we had to head back for a doctor’s appointment.

Presented by National Speedway Directory at RPM Promoters Workshops

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – February 27, 2012 – National Speedway Directory, presented the National Speedway Directory Award for the outstanding annual short track event to Super DIRT Week XL at the New York State Fairgrounds.

Super DIRT Week’s concrete walls and hard-clayed surface has pushed man and machine to the limit. For more than forty years, it has become a spectacle with race fans sitting through sun, freezing temperatures, rain, or even snow to cheer on their favorite drivers

Tom Deery and Brian Carter - World Racing Group receive the NSD Short Track Event of Year Award.

“The recipient of this year’s award has been an institution for more than 40 years,” said Tim Frost, publisher of National Speedway Directory. “We are pleased to acknowledge the dedicated efforts of World Racing Group for continuing this tradition.”

The award was presented at the 39th Annual RPM Promoters Workshops during Speedweeks in Daytona Beach, Fla. The three-day workshop included 542 people representing 151 tracks from the United States and three Canadian provinces.

“We are honored to receive this award,” said World Racing Group CEO Brian Carter. “Many months of planning and preparation go into making Super DIRT Week a successful event. It’s a true team effort among all of our staff and competitors to put on a show for the passionate DIRTcar Racing fans.”

One of the new elements to Super DIRT Week in 2011 was moving Friday events under the lights, generating a huge buzz among fans and media.

“Promoters are rethinking how they promote events, but tradition and legacy remain important,” said Stewart Doty, RPM Workshop organizer. “To draw new young fans, racing must remake itself into a virtual as well as a real sport, and involve itself more effectively in their online world, but stay true to its roots.”
